Oh wow, it’s been a while! Haven’t wrote much reviews since summer started.

I was browsing the online journal of neuroscience ; nothing really sparks my interest to write any further discussion, all were small facts that doesn’t concern most people (probably except me). American journal of psychology is usually more captivating to the public. Today lets talk about false memory and bilinguals. (I am not going to put any reference to this discussion, if you are going to complain about it please kindly close the window)

False memory had always been a fascinating topic in the psy field, whether its general social psychology or behavioral psychology; even lawyers who knows nothing about science has a certain understanding of this topic. Here is our article: False memory in bilinguals: Does switching languages increase false memories? by Marmolejo G; Diliberto-Macaluso KA; Altarriba JE. Critical topic for us international students, as well as for every single student who learn in english. Our native language being Cantonese (chinese) and learning in english – what are the essential factors and limitations that might have kept us from learning in english?

Abstract:
“People often receive and recount information in different languages. This experiment examined the impact of switching languages on false recall, recognition, and recognition confidence. We presented Spanish–English bilinguals with 10 lists of words associated to a critical nonpresented lure, either in English or in Spanish. Each list was followed by free recall either in English or in Spanish. The final stage was a recognition test in either language. Results showed a higher proportion of veridical and false recall in English, the more dominant language, than in Spanish, the native language. Noncritical intrusions were equivalent in both languages. More importantly, false recall, false recognition, and false recognition confidence were higher across languages than within languages. The results are examined in relation to current research and interpretations of bilingual false memory.

Pop pop, second article right off google while doing my little research
Development of false memories in bilingual children and adults

Both experiment concluded that bilinguals have a more detrimental false memories effect in between-languages conditions (ie English VS. Spanish) when compared to within-language conditions. This is interesting, on the contrary of what I first hypothesize, we are more likely to complicate ourselves when recounting information in our native languages. (Ehh… I need to write an extra paragraph criticizing myself for not being scientific…)

My first insight was based on social outgroup homogentity effect; presumably, we have rather limited exposure on our second language compared to our native – and the outgroup (ie foreign language) is more distinguishable relative to our ingroup (ie native language). And hence we are less likely to create false memory when encountering a more discriminated language as much effort and attention is required to interpret a particular event. Making logic?…. This social psychology approach was a total fallacy, we name what I just did an illusory correlation; ignoring the variables and drawing assumptions one after another to create an erroreous belief. Meh, it was just an hypothesis.

Back to topic, I am not going to review the procedures and materials being used in the experiments, they were all well summarized in the abstracts. All we are concern here are the results and how does it impacts our education. As forementioned, false recognition tends to increase  in between language conditions regardless of age in all cases, and the rate seems to increase with respect to the dominance of the participant’s native language.  Clearly, this phenomenon applies to me and all other chinese who are learning in english. I am going to operationally define rate of false memory(recognition) as items being recalled incorrectly. According to my reliable associative memory, international students from faculty of science does poorly in fill in the blank sections compared to native students (english speaking students).

1) presumably, we lack the fluency of english relatively, less language choice availability should suggest a more poor performance in written section.

2) the big fact here, we are not able to recall items as efficient as the native english speakers (ie increased rate of false memory).

3)We tend to remember new vocabularies, particularly scientific terms in an more abstracted form for example images, associations with other abstract terms. (ie meningomyelocele, a type of spinal bifida… I can’t even pronounced it) And again because of  the very limited availability heuristics, take away all the complex neuromechanisms – the memory is not stored as “intact” when english is considered a foreign language.

The experiments also suggested the dominance of native language correlates the rate of false memory in participants.  What does it infer? Let’s take a step back, look at the issue in an opposite direction and draw a straight line to our final conclusion. To Avoid this natural disadvantage for us the non-native english speakers, we must increase our fluency in english. See my drift? Lesser dominance, lesser false recalls, as a matter of fact this old saying had been explained scientifically.

“Psychology is common sense, but being termed, organized, and explained.”

And we left early to watch transformers 2, it will probably be up soon on tom365 (Learn how to watch DVD quality movies for free!)

Transformers 2 was a longggg movie. Well I always like long movies, worth my money. It was practically better than the first transformers, much more interactions between humans and the robots. The movie itself didn’t explain how those new robots came from, they just appeared… And the ending was a little slack, and to me it means the upcoming of transformers 3. (it was truely obvious)

Offical transformers movie site and trailers

Great Great great movie, must watch!

It was Sunday and it was Esther’s Wedding Day.  I was literally just sitting and listening, actually I didn’t take much photos on the signing contest either; Sometimes you just miss the moments while you are doing all the planning, thinking how to create an artistic photograph, and afterall you miss the true moments. (We miss the moments so you guys can remember it! Photographer is such a self-sacrificing job)

How strange, died all a sudden from a cardiac arrest? But well, to many people he was dead long ago.

(CNN) — Entertainer Michael Jackson died after being taken to a hospital on Thursday having suffered cardiac arrest, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office.

A Los Angeles fire official told CNN that paramedics arrived at Michael Jackson’s home after a 911 call.

Paramedics took Jackson, 50, from his west Los Angeles home Thursday afternoon to UCLA Medical Center, where a team of physicians attempted to resuscitate him for more than an hour, said brother Jermaine Jackson. He said the famed singer was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. PT.

An autopsy is scheduled Friday, he said. Results are expected Friday afternoon, according to Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles coroner’s office, who also said Jackson was unresponsive when he arrived at the hospital.

Fire Capt. Steve Ruda told CNN paramedics were sent to a west Los Angeles, California, residence after a 911 call came in at 12:21 p.m.

Law enforcement officials said the Los Angeles Police Department Robbery-Homicide Division opened an investigation into Jackson’s death. They stressed there is no evidence of criminal wrongdoing but that they would conduct interviews with family members and friends.

CNN Analyst Roland S. Martin spoke on Thursday with Marlon Jackson, brother of Michael Jackson.

“I talked to Frank Dileo, Michael’s manager. Frank told me that Michael last night was complaining about not feeling well. He called to tell him he wasn’t feeling well.

“Michael’s doctor went over to see him, and Frank said, ‘Marlon, from last night to this morning, I don’t know what happened.’ When they got to him this morning, he wasn’t breathing. They rushed him to the hospital and couldn’t bring him around.”

“Janet Jackson is grief-stricken and devastated at the sudden loss of her brother,” Kenneth Crear, her manager said. “She is … flying immediately to California to be with her family.”

Michael Jackson, the music icon from Gary, Indiana, was known as the “King of Pop.” Jackson had many No. 1 hits, and his “Thriller” is the best-selling album of all time….[....]

At the medical center, every entrance to the emergency room was blocked by security guards. Even hospital staffers were not permitted to enter. A few people stood inside the waiting area, some of them crying

Haven’t seen my grandfather for quite a long time, he looks rather aged since last year. Of all sudden, he gave me an old watch, bought back in 1989(20 years…). The color Gold is definitely not my style… but oh well, I am still young…

Bought this macro extension tube like 5 months ago off ebay, this is probably the first time I ever used it =v=

extension tube

Macro manual focusing is harddddd. I haven’t really tried a auto macro lens before, but the depth of field is extraordinarily narrow using those tubes; move slightly and you get a out of focus image (even at a smaller aperture).

Non-AF Macro extension tubes:
1) Decrease minimum focus distance, by increasing the distance between the camera’s sensor and lens

2) Are Cheap – Unlike the expensive macro filters, cost me like $4CDN (macro filters may have a superior effect afterall, check this out!)

3) Increase a lens’ capability without degrading image quality, due to the lack of lens inside the tube!

All photos were taken with my made in china macro extension tube + FA43mm f/1.9 :)

embedded by Embedded Video

Camp

Icebreak..

-v- mad nasty

Hea

DAY 2

Choice, a heart choice.

Choice, whether its a choice ranging from choosing what to eat, to choosing a university major, may all be critical in determining our beliefs and  ultimately our future.

Being a science student, it is my natural tendency to think from different approach scientifically.  And here is our big question  – why do we always have to  throw in the role of God in choice making? Well obviously there lies two straight forward answers to this; if you believe in Christianity’s God, you believe he is always there, and if you don’t believe, then you simply won’t like to introduce God! But of course, it is a little more deeper than that.

In fact both scenarios, whether there is or isn’t a God being involved,  both cases demonstrate universal  logic and faith. And that’s what have most people confused. In the God case,  your faith lies into the existence of a perfect God, and thus every choice you make can be favored by God or disfavored by God, but regardless of what choice you’ve finally made and what kind of outcomes you’ve obtained, God is going to lead his believers to the Godly heaven.

Let’s take a very simple example – you pray for your sick mother to be healed, she is either healed or not healed; as if A) she is healed, everyone is happy and we thank God for his help, or B) she is not healed, everyone is not happy and we say this is God’s plan and sometimes we have to endure it. And this is how the atheist detest Christianity’s God Is the Key All in One Theory, because if you throw in a God, everything make sense and any further details or explanations are highly unnecessary.

On the contrary, the non-believers put their faith in probability hunting. What is the chance of me, being born in a christian family, studying in Canada, majoring in neuroscience, writing this blog right now? The probability to fulfill all the conditions creating an Edward Wong is like traveling to the edge of this universe, throwing a dart to hit a specific location on Earth sized like an atom. Not much eh? Scientific speaking, we refer such low probabiliy to IMPOSSIBLE. But here we go, here is the logic, I am sure there is a terminology that describes how events following events and finally produced an unique outcome – but this is still probability hunting, and non-believers put their faith in such.

Here is a good  quote  summarizing our two major approache:

“The HOX gene [evolution] doesn’t say there is no God, but does it needs it? Probably not…” quoted from Dr PZ Myers in a debate at my university.

HOX gene doesn’t require the necessity of  God, and therefore probability built us. Or HOX gene is ALSO created by God, it is God’s plan to use HOX gene to build us (First assumed God cannot be created)

Now, God in choice making? To me, probably a yes, and to you? Faith in probability or faith in God?

BOAT TO CHIMELONG

QUICKLunch

our hotel room

chimelong-4

Good stuff

去水上樂園一定要帶自己拖鞋(unless you gonna buy the expensive one there =.=) 唔係到時你想去廁所就…
